Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be in for an awkward reunion with a Man Utd star he previously said a brutal two-word comment about if he rejoins the club.
Following Amorim’s sacking on Monday (January 5), Darren Fletcher took over temporarily while United look for an interim head coach until the end of the 2025/26 season.
Several names appear to be in the running for the vacancy, including ex-Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca and Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer, who managed the club between 2018 and 2021, has reportedly engaged in talks over a return to the Red Devils, while Michael Carrick and Fletcher have also held talks with the football club.

The former Norway international led United to a second-place finish in 2021, something which only he and Jose Mourinho have managed since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 retirement.

He also coached United to the 2021 Europa League final, which they lost 11-10 on penalties against La Liga side Villarreal.
The 52-year-old has been without a role since being sacked by Besiktas in August of 2025, having earlier been jobless for three years after he left United.
If he does return to the club, Solskjaer will link up with several players whom he coached during his previous spell as United boss, including Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot.
And it was Dalot that reportedly caught the brunt of a negative comment from the Norwegian during his first spell as Red Devils boss.
In 2022, the MEN reported that during the 52-year-old’s tenure, earwiggers heard him suggest that Dalot “can’t defend”.

During Solskjær’s final full season as United boss, the Portugal right-back was loaned to AC Milan, which could’ve been interpreted as a reflection of the then-manager’s thoughts on the defender, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka favoured by the Norwegian.
Now, four seasons on, Dalot, 26, is more experienced and has 230 United appearances under his belt.
If Solskjaer does replace Amorim, he will have to choose between Dalot, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui at right-back.
But for now, Fletcher will remain in charge of the club, having overseen United’s 2-2 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday (January 7).
