The Rock could make a huge return to WWE later this year, in order to set up a massive WrestleMania 38 main event next April.

The Rock, real name Dwayne Johnson, is the biggest star the WWE has ever had, transitioning from a wrestling superstar into one of the most recognisable actors on the planet.

His star rose during the popular 'Attitude Era' and he left the business in 2004 to become a full time actor, only occasionally returning to his former life as a wrestler.

The 49-year-old's most recent official match was in 2016 at WrestleMania 32, when he faced Erick Rowan in an impromptu fight that lasted six seconds.

However he could soon be back in action. Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer saying that an appearance at Survivor Series this year could be the start of things.

"The hope is for Dwayne Johnson to make an appearance at that show [Survivor Series] but that isn't locked in," Meltzer wrote, "The hope is for around that time.

"If he's involved that would make it a huge show and it would lead credence to Reigns vs Johnson for WrestleMania."

Meltzer also claimed that Survivor Series is going to be the company's 'biggest show of the year,' with WWE expected to go 'all in' to make it that way.

It is not the first time that a 'Mania' match between The Rock and Reigns, who are cousins, has been rumoured.

Meltzer wrote last year that the pair were expected to meet in 2022 but said that it was '1,500 plans ago,' with WWE well known for changing things a lot.

The Rock has also talked about facing Reigns, who he starred alongside in Fast and The Furious: Shaw & Hobbs, in the future.

In 2023, the 'Showcase of the Immortals,' as Mania is known, is due to take place in California and originally the Rock suggested that's when he'd face Reigns, saying, "We'll go to Hollywood for WrestleMania 39, and I think it just makes sense."

It looks like things may have changed, perhaps due to the fact that WWE hasn't been able to have fans at their events in over a year.

Some fans did return at WrestleMania 37 in April, which was hosted over two nights, but that was after the previous year's event was behind closed doors.

Fans will once again be in attendance at SummerSlam in August, which is being held at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium, which can have up to 72,000 inside.

There has been rumours that the show will include both John Cena and Brock Lesnar, who are only part time now, in an attempt to grab as many viewers as possible.

The show is on a Saturday night for the first time since 1992, which took place at Wembley, and will go head-to-head with the Manny Pacquiao vs. Errol Spence Jr boxing event.
