Three Manchester United players were given a brutal rating by French outlet L’Equipe following the Red Devils’ stunning 5-4 (7-6 on aggregate) comeback win in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday.

The sides came into the game level after a 2-2 draw in Lyon on April 10.

On Thursday, Man United started well and found themselves 2-0 up on the night at Old Trafford thanks to strikes from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot.

However, the Ligue 1 outfit fought back and found themselves level at 2-2 on 77 minutes after goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico.

Goalscorer and Lyon captain Tolisso was then sent off on 89 minutes for a second bookable offence, meaning his side had it all to do with ten men heading into extra time.

And to the dismay of the majority of supporters gathered inside Old Trafford, the away side took a shock lead through Rayan Cherki on 104 minutes before former Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette scored a penalty five minutes later to make it 4-2 on the night.

But against all odds, United hit back with three quick-fire goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire to secure a historic 5-4 win (7-6 on aggregate) to set up a semi-final clash against Athletic Club, who had beaten Rangers 2-0 earlier in the evening.

Despite their improbable comeback, French outlet L’Equipe still slammed the United squad and didn’t give any player a match rating higher than 7/10.

And three players in particular were slapped with a low score.

Substitute Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu were given a 3/10, while striker Rasmus Hojlund was also slapped with the same rating.

Captain Fernandes was rated highest with a 7/10 for his showing.

French media react to Man Utd vs Lyon

As a whole, the French media singled out left-back Shaw with FootMercato explaining how "he was particularly fragile and collapsed once Lyon made it 2-1. In extra time, he conceded a penalty which almost buried the last hopes of the Mancunians".

Meanwhile, MaxiFoot described the England defender's performance as "Absolutely catastrophic for more than an hour" and that "the English left-back was pushed around by Fofana and conceded a penalty that could have sunk Manchester United".

Homme du Match wrote: "He is dominated in all the situations where Lyon enter the box.

"His challenge on Fofana indisputably proves his imbecility. He tackles after the Belgian has lost the ball. Very poor and dangerous match by the former Southampton player.”
