Marcus Rashford only received 'the coaching he needed' from two managers in his career

Marcus Rashford has played for some of the biggest football clubs in the world, including Manchester United, Barcelona and Aston Villa; between them, they have won nine Champions Leagues.

The England international has played under several world-class managers, including Jose Mourinho, Thomas Tuchel and Louis van Gaal.

When Rashford burst onto the scene, much was anticipated from the attacker, but, to some fans, he has fallen short of these expectations. He is now seen as a squad option at the Red Devils; however, there may be an argument that he has not received the right coaching.

Marcus Rashford has not received the required coaching to develop

Rashford looked to be a future Manchester United and England star after his first campaign in senior football; while he has had a solid career at both club and international level, it could be argued he never reached the heights many fans expected after his first few appearances.

The 28-year-old scored eight goals in his first season across all competitions, making 18 appearances as Louis van Gaal gave him his debut against Midtjylland in the Europa League.

Yet, while it was an encouraging start under the Dutch manager, he would be replaced by Mourinho at the end of that season, in the summer of 2016.

While the attacker has had multiple impressive seasons at United, Villa and Barcelona, there are several campaigns during which he has struggled in front of goal.

Now, an argument has been made in the Telegraph that Rashford only received ‘the coaching he needed’ from two managers in his career.

The first being Van Gaal, the man who handed Rashford his debut, and this may be easy to see in his output during that particular campaign.

The Dutch manager was renowned for his impressive attention to detail, leaving no stone unturned when it came to his tactical approach and coaching, so it is no surprise that he would have aimed to develop a young Rashford.

Worryingly, the report suggests the next manager to give him the required coaching was Hansi Flick at Barcelona, meaning there is a possibility that his potential was being stunted across nine entire seasons.

Rashford is obviously the key to his own development, but, like a lot of footballers, there is a need for the correct coaching to reach their full potential.

Coaches who have had Marcus Rashford as part of their squad

Rashford has had some of the most notable names coach him throughout his career at United, Barcelona and Villa.

At the Red Devils, he has played under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, van Gaal, Mourinho, Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim, and now Michael Carrick, all permanent managers.

Meanwhile, he has had some other notable names as interim coaches, including Ralf Rangnick and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Rashford had a fine goalscoring record for three seasons under Solskjær and Ten Hag, bagging 73 strikes across 157 appearances and helping his side to win the EFL Cup.

While at Villa under Unai Emery, it appeared that his career was revitalised, having impressed in several matches under the Basque manager.

So, while there may have been moments through his career in which he may not have received the correct coaching, there are examples of seasons under five managers in which he was performing well consistently.
