Bruno Fernandes’ four-word answer about Marcus Rashford's Man Utd return speaks volumes

Bruno Fernandes has explained exactly why Manchester United kept hold of Marcus Rashford during the summer transfer window.

Rashford returned to Old Trafford for pre-season after Barcelona opted not to trigger an option to buy clause in his contract following his season-long loan last campaign.

He has started United's last two Premier League games, putting in a particularly impressive performance in the 2-2 draw against Everton, before being rested for the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah. And United captain Fernandes has explained what the dressing room thinks of him.

In a new interview with Sky Sports, Fernandes is asked which player gets to training at Carrington the earliest.

"Normally, always Diogo [Dalot]. He's always here first," Fernandes replied.

"This season, also Rashy, and Ben [Sesko], are normally the ones that arrive early. Together with me.

"But obviously it depends. Because I sometimes like to drop my kids at school, so sometimes I get in even earlier because they are school at 8:20 or 8:30, so I come straight away and I get here early. But normally Diogo is already here!"

His answer is a further example, alongside his on-pitch performances, of why Rashford's return to Old Trafford has so far been so positive.

The Sun reported that, as per a source, Rashford 'couldn't have done much more' when it comes to 'attitude and application' upon his return to the club.

The 28-year-old is also coming off the back of a strong World Cup with England, whose manager Thomas Tuchel he credited for 'believing in me' when he was discarded by Ruben Amorim at United.

United head coach Michael Carrick has repeatedly praised Rashford - a former playing team-mate of his - since the forward's return to Old Trafford in the summer.

Rashford was an unused substitute against Sabah on Thursday night, with Carrick choosing not to bring him on during the 4-0 victory.

But rather than the decision being made for tactical reasons, or due to performance, Carrick said it was 'nice to keep Marcus fresh for the weekend' - indicating Rashford will start when United host Manchester City in the first Manchester derby of the 2026/27 season at Old Trafford on Sunday.

"Really pleased with Marcus," Carrick stated after the Sabah win. "Really pleased with him, so many ways. I think it's pretty obvious with his performances.

"Again, he was a real threat on Sunday, unfortunate not to get a little bit more success, but he was a real threat. I'm not really sure what else to say. We're just really pleased to have him.

"He's doing a lot of things really well and settled back in really quickly. It was nice to keep Marcus fresh for the weekend."
