Four midfielders Andoni Iraola could sign including £75m star after Liverpool tell Alexis Mac Allister to leave

Andoni Iraola is planning a midfield overhaul at Liverpool in the next two transfer windows, and Alexis Mac Allister is one player who could be sold to raise valuable funds for a replacement.

Sky Sport journalist Sacha Tavolieri revealed earlier this week that Mac Allister's departure from Anfield remains a 'concrete possibility', and the club is unwilling to 'extend his contract' that expires in June 2028.

The Reds are planning heavy investment in the Argentine's position, despite his desire to stay in Merseyside, having established himself as a key player since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion three years ago. Here, SPORTbible analyses four midfielders Liverpool could sign to replace the 27-year-old.

Alex Scott

Bournemouth superstar Alex Scott is the first and arguably most obvious player to replace Mac Allister.

Scott was signed by Iraola for £25million from Bristol City in August 2023 and has flourished into one of the Premier League's best midfielders.

Combining elite-level ball-carrying and playmaking qualities, the 23-year-old is exactly what Liverpool are crying out for in their engine room, and the Spaniard is keen to reunite with the player he spotted in the Championship three years ago.

It was reported on October 15 that Liverpool had entered the 'driving seat' for Scott after the England international refused to sign a new contract with the club. The problem is, the Cherries want £100million for the all-action midfielder, and they will need to lower that valuation significantly for clubs to consider launching a serious bid for him.

Lamine Camara

Scott is Liverpool's top priority for that position, but according to journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, Lamine Camara is another player on Iraola's 'shortlist'.

The Monaco machine was supposed to join Chelsea on transfer deadline day to replace Enzo Fernandez, but the French club pulled out of a deal at the last minute as they felt they could secure a bigger fee for the 22-year-old in 2027.

Camara has emerged as one of Ligue 1's most promising talents as a high-energy, box-to-box midfielder and would offer Liverpool the sort of attributes they are crying out for in the middle of the park.

Iraola wants a dominant presence centrally who can win the ball back aggressively and transition play quickly up the pitch, with the all-action midfielder supplying both qualities in abundance. The Senegal international could be a cheaper alternative to Scott that the Reds could explore next summer.

Felix Nmecha

Plettenberg mentioned in the above post that Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha is held in 'high regard' by the two-time Premier League champions, but is not currently a 'priority target'.

That being said, the 26-year-old would be an outstanding signing and a big upgrade on Mac Allister in the engine room, having established himself on the European stage with Dortmund and internationally with Germany.

Nmecha, who can operate as a number eight or 10, combines high-level physical presence with progressive ball carrying and caught the eye during Germany's disappointing World Cup, scoring once and assisting twice in his nation's opening two group games before they were knocked out by Paraguay in the last 32.

According to SportBILD, the former Manchester City talent has an €80million (£67m) exit clause in his contract that expires towards the end of June 2027, and Liverpool could trigger that before the German giants reportedly ask for closer to €100million (£83.7m).

Adam Wharton

Liverpool have a long-standing interest in Crystal Palace playmaker Adam Wharton. The Reds showed interest in the 22-year-old during the summer and, with Mac Allister edging towards the exit door, he could re-emerge on their radar.

Similarly to Scott, Wharton has established himself as one of the Premier League's best, impressing as a deep-lying playmaker in a Palace side that earned Europa League qualification after winning the Conference League.

An incredible passer, with elite press resistance and the ability to drive with the ball, the Englishman would instantly improve Iraola's midfield options. The Eagles have insisted that their prized asset isn't for sale, but their position in the table at the time of writing could change that stance as they want in the region of £75million for him.

Pierre Sage's side are only a point above the relegation places and, if they do drop to the Championship, he would almost certainly leave. However, it is widely expected that Wharton will depart Selhurst Park in 2027 - regardless of where Palace finish - and his next destination could be Anfield.
