A surprise name has emerged as the favourite to replace Arne Slot as Liverpool manager following the dismal loss to PSV.
On Wednesday night, Liverpool suffered yet another major defeat as they lost 4-1 to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League clash at Anfield.
It marks the third successive defeat for the Reds, who have now conceded seven goals while scoring just one goal in three games, two of which were at home.
As expected, the result piles further pressure on Liverpool manager Slot, with many calling for the Dutchman to be sacked just seven months after he led them to the Premier League title last season.

And as the pressure on Slot continues to build, a surprising new name has come out as the favourite to replace him as Liverpool manager.

Ever since Liverpool's 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last weekend, several big names have been linked with taking Slot's job.
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola and Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner are among the favourites to take over in the Liverpool dug out, but it is former player Xabi Alonso that viewed as the most likely candidate.

Despite the fact that he has so far impressed since taking over as Real Madrid manager over the summer, Alonso is also facing uncertainty regarding the future of his role.
Poor recent results combined with several reports that the Spaniard has fallen out with several key players in the Real Madrid changing room, including the likes of Vinicius Jr, has led to some pressure mounting on Alonso.
Therefore, the odds currently suggest that Alonso could make the spectacular swap of leaving Real Madrid and returning to Liverpool, listing him as a 3/1 favourite to replace Slot.
However, while Slot was leading Liverpool to a brutal 4-1 defeat, Alonso led the Spanish giants to a 4-3 win over Greek club Olympiacos F.C, with all four goals scored by superstar striker Kylian Mbappe.

But Alonso isn't the only manager tipped at 3/1 to take over as Liverpool boss, as former manager Jurgen Klopp, who left the club just at the end of the 2023/24 season, is joint-favourite to make a spectacular Anfield return.
Currently, Klopp is working as the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, a role which he started in January this year after leaving Liverpool, admitting that he was "running out of energy".
Recently, when asked if he would ever consider returning to manage Liverpool, the German refused to rule out the possibility, despite the fact that it currently seems unlikely.

"I said I will never coach a different team in England so that means, if [I did return], then it's Liverpool," he said on the Diary of a CEO podcast
"So, yeah, theoretically it is possible."
