Raheem Sterling facing two years in prison after former England star is charged with three offences

Raheem Sterling could be set tor two years in prison after being hit with a trio of charges over an incident which saw him crash his car in May.

Sterling, who is currently a free agent, was arrested by Hampshire Police in May after his Lamborghini collided with motorway barriers near the Minley Interchange on the M3.

No other vehicles were involved and nobody suffered any injuries.

Sterling was pulled over and took him into custody after the incident, which happened at 9am. As per a statement, he was then released on bail.

It was initially stated that the ex England international was arrested on possession of a Class C drug, which includes a range of substances.

As reported by The Sun, the former Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool winger has now been charged with dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide and failing to provide a specimen.

Sterling will now appear in court on 15 September to face the charges. If convicted of dangerous driving, he could be sent to prison for two years.

A statement from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman issued to The Sun said: “A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3.

“Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.

“The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, on 28 May, 2026.

“No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

“Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates court on 15 September.”

Sterling's last club was Dutch side Feyenoord, where he played eight times in a short stint.

The 31-year-old made his first-team debut with Liverpool before going on to win four Premier League titles with Manchester City after a £49 million transfer in 2015.

The QPR academy graduate returned to London with Chelsea in 2022 and later found himself out in limbo, spending part the 2024/25 season on loan at Arsenal.

Surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and banned from using the club's facilities while in exile, Sterling's contract was terminated via mutual consent in January of this year.

After talks with a number of clubs, he elected to move to the Eredivisie - penning a short-term contract with Robin van Persie's Feyenoord.

But after just 421 minutes of game-time, Sterling's stay in Rotterdam was not extended when the 2025/26 season came to an end.

Sterling has been capped 82 times by England, scoring 20 goals and playing in multiple World Cups.

His last appearance for the Three Lions came in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final loss to France in Qatar and he is unlikely to represent his country again.

The winger has scored 123 Premier League goals, putting him 20th on the all-time list.
