Thierry Henry was quick to answer when deciding who was better out of Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes.

Henry, 47, is widely considered to be one of the best players ever to play in the Premier League, having scored 175 goals in 258 league appearances during his time at Arsenal, where he won two Premier League titles.

He then went on to sign for Barcelona in 2007 and won the Champions League in 2009.

During his time at Barca and Arsenal, he played with the likes of Lionel Messi, Patrick Viera, Xavi and Andres Iniesta, but some of his toughest challenges will have no doubt came against teams such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

During Henry’s time at the Gunners – between 1998 and 2007 – Scholes and Gerrard were arguably the two best centre-midfielders in England alongside Frank Lampard.

But who would Henry choose out of the Liverpool and Manchester United legends.

“Paul Scholes,” Henry said when speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football in 2015.

“You think Paul Scholes was better than Steven Gerrard?” asked Jamie Carragher.

“I was just about to say, the next one right behind - very close - would have been Stevie G,” Henry added.

“Paul Scholes was just ahead in his head,” explained the Frenchman.

“Every time we were playing them, we needed to find a way to stop him. I think Stevie G comes really close to him but Paul Scholes would have to win.”

And there is clearly mutual respect between the Premier League legends, as Scholes was quick to praise the former France forward in a column for the Independent back in 2014.

"Henry’s goal against United at Highbury in 2000 was among the best of the lot," wrote Scholes.

"Unfortunately for us, Sir Alex had warned us before the game about Arsenal playing the ball into Henry’s feet from short free-kicks. Sure enough, when we came to review the video of that marvellous goal, there was yours truly ambling across to try to block the ball going into Henry. Before we knew it, he had flicked it up and volleyed it into our net.

"Playing against him was difficult, to say the least. And while we always had a plan, there is no way you go into a game against a player of Henry’s quality with a foolproof approach to keeping him quiet. We had top-class centre-halves and some days they could stop him, other times not. He would sometimes go wide and then it would be Gary Neville’s job. To Gary’s great credit, I can never recall a time when he found himself embarrassed."
