A major issue with Andoni Iraola's Liverpool was exposed against Fulham and it simply can't be fixed right now

Since taking charge of Liverpool, head coach Andoni Iraola has been met with a handful of pressing issues, but one in particular bubbled to the surface during their goalless draw against Fulham.

The Reds have now drawn each of their last four Premier League games at Anfield, their longest winless run on home soil in the competition between December 2020 and March 2021, according to Opta.

It was an afternoon that summed up Liverpool's frustrating start to the season. Going forward, they lacked energy and someone who could grab the game by the scruff of the neck, despite Bradley Barcola's first league start.

But arguably the biggest issue on show was at full-back. In the past, Liverpool have looked a threat in wide areas, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson offering a creative outlet.

However, their current options are limited and with the transfer window long gone, it could become a major issue in the coming months.

Ronald Araujo started at right-back for the third game running but his struggles going forward were exposed on several occasions, with a wayward cross in the 49th minute summing up his afternoon.

Kostas Tsimikas, meanwhile, was preferred over the out-of-form Milos Kerkez at left-back, although he was hooked at the break after a poor first-half display that featured several sloppy passes.

Of course, Jeremie Frimpong was brought in to replace Alexander-Arnold, but he has also struggled to live up to expectations and failed to make an impact after replacing Araujo in the 72nd minute.

It was an afternoon that was perhaps best summed up by Liverpool Echo writer Ian Doyle.

"That has to be up there with one of the worst games I've ever attended in 43 and a half years of watching football," he wrote on X, adding: "It was probably even worse than that."

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Jamie Carragher backed Szoboszlai to play at right-back, despite his preference to play further up the pitch.

"He's signed a new contract and I can only imagine in those talks, they were desperate for him to stay, he's almost said, 'I want to play midfield'," said Carragher.

"He's moved around a bit and he started the season in central midfield. I don't see him as that. For me, in midfield he's a Jordan Henderson - runner, energy, with more of a goal threat. But Liverpool don't play that way and he's not really a No 10.

“His best role could actually be at right-back. He'd get plenty of the ball, he can run and almost play that Trent role from there.

"But there's no way he's going to want to play there because he's just signed a new contract for £350,000 a week.

“You've just done this big thing, he's the vice-captain, I just think that's a conversation Iraola is going to have to have going forward, because the midfield is not right and he's part of that midfield not being right."
