John Cena's final run in WWE looks set to include more history, with one report revealing an unexpected role for his penultimate match.
Cena has embarked on a retirement tour in 2025, making history by becoming a record-breaking 17-time world champion at WrestleMania 41 with victory over Cody Rhodes in Las Vegas after a shock heel turn.
Reverting to his usual superhero character, Cena stole the show with AJ Styles at Crown Jewel in Perth and on Raw on Monday night, he finally completed wrestling in his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts.
Cena faced off against Dominik Mysterio in an impromptu Intercontinental Championship match at The Garden and ended up winning the only title he had never won in WWE.

The match, which saw Cena become the 22nd male Grand Slam champion in WWE history, was initially pencilled in to take place at Survivor Series in San Diego on November 29.

But it was brought forward for shock factor and now there is plenty of intrigue as to what Cena will do at Petco Park for his final Premium Live Event.
However, it does not appear as though Cena will defend his newly won Intercontinental title. According to Ibou of Self Made, Cena will have a different role as he is poised to be part of CM Punk's team for the men's WarGames match.
Following up from information from Cory Hays of BodySlam, Ibou said: "I was informed this morning that John Cena is going to be in the WarGames match with CM Punk. He will be on Team Punk."
Cena has done it all in WWE but this will tick one more of the list as he has never competed in the team-based steel cage match.
In a stipulation force birthed by WCW but brought back on WWE's main roster in 2022, teams of five will lock horns in a roofless cage surrounding two rings placed side by side.

Announced on Monday, world champion Punk will be joined by undisputed WWE champion Rhodes and Jey Uso as well as two unannounced wrestlers, to face off against The Vision (Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed) and Logan Paul and two other teammates.
John Cena's announcement for final match
Cena is slated to be in the mix, while Roman Reigns has been tipped to finalise a star-studded team.
His final match is still taking place as planned on December 13 in Washington, D.C, as part of Saturday Night's Main Event. The 48-year-old's last opponent will be decided by a 16-man 'Last Time Is Now' tournament which kicked off on Monday, with former world champion Gunther widely expected to retire Cena.
Also on Monday, the WWE great announced that his final show will included "main roster talent hosting exhibition matches" against the best performers in the NXT developmental system - a move said to have been driven by Cena himself.
