Wrexham set for £17 million windfall ahead of League Two return

Wrexham enjoyed a stellar season which ended with promotion back to League Two

Wrexham are set to receive a huge £17 million windfall payment from the government ahead of their return to League Two next season.

Last month, the Welsh club secured their return to the English Football League for the first time in 15 years after beating Boreham Wood on the final day of the National League season.

Since their promotion was confirmed, the Wrexham players jetted off to Las Vegas for a celebratory trip.

The holiday was fully covered by the club’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Now, the owners themselves are set to receive financial help in their bid to improve the club’s infrastructure.

According to The Times, Wrexham are set to receive financial backing to improve their home stadium, The Racecourse.

The plan is for the stadium capacity to be increased from 10,711 to 16,000, which would be more than Premier League side Bournemouth’s stadium capacity.

Wrexham’s The Racecourse stadium is set to host their first international fixture in October when Wales take on Gibraltar in a friendly match.

On the night that promotion was sealed, Reynolds said: “I am not sure I can process what happened tonight. I am still a little speechless.

“[People ask] 'Why Wrexham?'. This is why Wrexham. This happening, right now, is why. Boreham Wood showed up today. They are an incredible team. They have one of the best defences in the entire league.”

He added: “This entire story, the reason we are all on edge of our seats is because Notts County are so damn good. They deserve to go up. We are rooting for Notts County. We want to see them go up.”

Whilst McElhenney said: “Well I think we can hear what it feels to the town. It's a time of celebration and be welcomed into their community and be welcomed to this, it is the honour of my life.”
