Trent Alexander-Arnold WON'T make England's World Cup squad, claims former Liverpool star

Danny Murphy expects Trent Alexander-Arnold to be left out of England's squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Alexander-Arnold has faced increased scrutiny after a series of disappointing performances for a Liverpool team struggling for consistency this season.

The 23-year-old faces a battle to make England's squad for the World Cup, which begins on November 20, with the Three Lions currently blessed with an embarrassment of riches at right-back.

Manchester City's Kyle Walker, Chelsea's Reece James and Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier are among a group of players fighting for a spot in Gareth Southgate's side.

All four players were included in Southgate's latest squad for this month's Nations League matches against Italy and Germany on Thursday.

But former Liverpool midfielder Murphy expects Alexander-Arnold to be the one to miss out when the final World Cup squad is announced next month.

Speaking ahead of the Nations League squad announcement, Murphy told talkSPORT: "I don't think Trent goes. I don't think that Southgate will pick him.

"Would I pick him? Yes! Everyone will have different choices because we are blessed with them [right-backs].

"The thing Trent gives you that none of the others can't is he can do things from an attacking point of view that the others can't.

"He sees passes they don't see and he can cross the ball better than any of them. I'm not suggesting Kieran Trippier and Reece James aren't good crossers of the ball.

"Trent is a creative player."

After talkSPORT host Jim White pointed out Alexander-Arnold's defensive mistakes this season, Murphy added: "That is why he won't go."

Despite being a key player for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool for a number of seasons, Alexander-Arnold has had to settle for bit-part role national side under Southgate.

He has won 17 caps for the Three Lions, scoring once, but was not part of the squad that reached the final of Euro 2020 after pulling out with an injury in the build-up to the tournament.

Alexander-Arnold will be hoping to make the cut for this winter's World Cup in Qatar.

England face Iran in their opening game of the tournament on November 21, before matches against the United States (November 25) and Wales (November 29) in Group B.
