Premier League legend Alan Shearer has named which English club had the best European atmosphere during a game he has witnesses.

Over the years, Premier League clubs have delivered some of the very best matches in European football.

In the last 10 years alone, English sides have won six European trophies, with several others missing out by losing the final game in a European competition.

And now, Premier League icon Shearer has revealed which game involving an English side he thinks produced the greatest atmosphere of all time.

While appearing on the latest episode of The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer, alongside co-hosts Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, was asked to name the greatest European night that he has watched or worked on.

The ex-England international quickly named Liverpool's historic comeback against Barcelona at Anfield in May 2019.

"That's the best atmosphere I've ever witnessed," Shearer said

"I mean that night at Anfield, I was lucky enough to be there doing the co-commentary and I've never heard anything like it.

"When they got the first goal you just thought 'they can't, can they?'

"And then they get the second and it's like 'Oh my God!'

"That night at Anfield was amazing."

Heading into the Champions League match, Liverpool were 3-0 down to the La Liga giants, meaning that just one away goal for Barcelona would almost certainly end the tie.

But Liverpool held firm and kept a clean sheet while braces from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum gave the Reds the necessarily lead to progress to the semifinals.

Jurgen Klopp's side then went on to beat fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final, winning their sixth title in the competition.

Lineker then asked Shearer to pick the best European match that he ever played in during his 18 year career.

He replied: "I remember going to San Siro for Newcastle v Inter Milan. There was 15 or 16 thousand Geordies behind the goal and it was amazing, the atmosphere that night was amazing."

During the 2003 match between Newcastle and the Italian giants, Shearer bagged a brace but it wasn't enough to win them the game as the two sides drew 2-2 in the group stage match.
