Leroy Sane has admitted he regrets the huge back tattoo of himself he got back in 2017.

The German international spent four days having an image of him celebrating scoring a goal for Manchester City inked on his back and it attracted plenty of headlines.

The picture in question is from when he struck in a thrilling 5-3 Champions League quarter final first leg win against AS Monaco in his first season at the Etihad Stadium.

City went on to be knocked out on away goals after a 5-5 aggregate score, with Sane's goal in the second leg not enough to secure passage.

Sane went on to have the City badge altered to the German national team shirt design and now, nearly four years on, the 25-year-old wishes he didn't get the body art.

"I was young. Today I would make a different decision," Sane told Der Spiegel, as per BILD.

"I was someone who first had to run into the wall, especially when I was young, even if it hurt, in order to learn from it."

"I was amazed that this topic got so big in the media. "I was still an absolute youngster. In Germany there were players much more important than me, and yet this tattoo was debated."

Sane's form at Bayern Munich has been mixed, with the former Schalke man scoring seven goals in 21 appearances.

He's had to deal with criticism, however, and was recently substituted 36 minutes after coming on as a substitute by Hansi Flick in a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen last month.

"When I saw my number on the substitution board, I knew there would be discussions about me," Sane said of the incident.

"When someone like Thomas Muller stands up for you so strongly in front of the TV cameras, this shows you that the team accepts you. I know that the club is behind me, otherwise they wouldn't have brought me. But I'm working very hard to get there."
