Manchester United discussed making a sensational move for Erling Haaland before the deadly Norwegian’s Manchester City switch.

Haaland has lit up the Premier League since making the £54million move from Borussia Dortmund to Pep Guardiola’s star-studded City side.

At times the Norwegian’s ability to find the back of the net has seemed superhuman - he’s managed a record-breaking 22 goals in his first 15 games for the Citizens!

However former Man Utd interim boss Ralf Rangnick admitted the Red Devils had also considered bringing in Haaland during the January 2022 transfer window, when the 22-year-old was still at Dortmund.

The Norwegian was part of a six-person transfer wish list that included some of Europe’s most sought-after stars, including RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic.

Speaking to BILD, the 64-year-old said: “It was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.

“That’s why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. Those were names that were realistic.

“We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Haaland when they were still on the market.

“But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach.”

The German replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to become manager at Old Trafford on an interim basis last November, with a view of eventually taking the reins as a consultant for two years.

Having been an important figure in establishing RB Leipzig as a force in German football, Rangnick was initially thought of as a good fit to help rebuild a fledgling Man Utd side.

However the German struggled as manager, and his time at the club came to a premature and abrupt end after less than seven month, when Rangnick left to become Austrian head coach.
