Liverpool fans boo national anthem on the day of King Charles' coronation

Liverpool fans booed 'God save the King' on the day of King Charles' coronation.

Liverpool fans booed the national anthem as it was played prior to the Premier League clash with Brentford.

The Reds hosted the West London side at Anfield, days after it was confirmed the club would play God save the King ahed of kick-off.

The Premier League had contacted clubs “strongly suggesting” that the anthem be played to honour King Charles' coronation.

It was met by monumental opposition by Liverpool fans, though manager Jurgen Klopp has said, "The club's position is my position".

Liverpool fans were widely expected to greet the anthem with jeers and duly erupted in a chorus when the national anthem played over the Anfield speakers.

It was almost deafening, with supporters also chanting "Liverpool" to mix up the boos. After the club's anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' blared out over the tannoy, fans could be heard singing, "You can stick your coronation up your a***" and "F*** the tories" during the game.

Ahead of the FA Cup final win against Chelsea, Liverpool fans booed the national anthem as well as the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William.

The disdain towards the establishment is related to the Conservative government's mismanagement of the city in the 1980s and the failings for the Hillsborough disaster, where 97 Liverpool fans died, at the end of the decade.

Klopp previously went on record to say that his fans "do not do it for no reason" in regards to the booing, but he admitted pre-match that he wasn't the ideal person to discuss the Royal Family.

"This is definitely a subject which I cannot really have a proper opinion about it," Klopp said in a honest press conference.

"I'm from Germany. We don't have a King or a Queen.

"I'm 55 years old. I really have no experience with that. Watching from the outside, it is a nice thing to watch. All the weddings are massive things in Germany, but nobody really knows what it is like, watching a movie or in a newspaper because we don't feel that.

"I'm pretty sure a lot of people in this country will enjoy the coronation. Some will maybe not really be interested and some will not like it. That's it, that's over the country. I think that's all I can say about it. The rest is my position is the club's position."
