Barcelona make huge Anthony Gordon transfer move after 'not normal' debut in Champions League

Barcelona have reportedly postponed a payment over Anthony Gordon amid his strong Champions League debut for the club.

Gordon has had an incredible start to life at the Blaugrana, with five assists in as many games after his £69 million transfer from Newcastle.

The England international came off the bench for his first Champions League appearance as the La Liga champions blitzed Feyenoord 5-1 at the Nou Camp.

Gordon entered the fray in the 63rd minute, replacing goalscorer Karim Adeyemi at 3-1 after he and Raphinha bagged the goals.

Lamine Yamal and new signing Gabriel Jesus got in on the act to complete the scoring.

The addition of Gordon, which came at the expense of compatriot Marcus Rashford, already looks to be a fine bit of business and Barcelona fans have taken to him immediately.

However, a new report from El Desmarque claims that Barcelona have changed the way in which the payments will be structured.

Barcelona, whose financial struggles have been well-documented, set up an arrangement where they would pay £18.88 million and then the remaining amount.

However it's claimed that it has now been agreed to change postpone the first short-term payment until June 2027 - a year on from when it was initially due.

The move appears to one made in order to balance Barcelona's financial debts. It has been reported that they owe £77.3 million in relation to new signings, having also paid £51.5 million to bring in Rodri from Manchester City and Karim Adeyemi for £18.9 million as their other significant signings.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire gave insight into the situation, taking to X to comment: "It’s the date of the transfer of Gordon’s registration that determines when the profit is booked, not the date the cash is (not) paid".

Gordon, the 13th Englishman to play for Barcelona, has already been a revelation for the Blaugrana. He has followed in the footsteps of both Gary Lineker and Marcus Rashford but the love from the Barcelona faithful feels different.

When he was brought on against Feyenoord, fans erupted in chants for the former Everton star.

The song was also heard during a break in play in the 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano and he was responded by tapping the badge on his chest in a gesture the fans loved.

According to Pol Ballus from The Athletic, Gordon's new teammates made "it clear to him that this is not normal" when it comes to the chant and that "normally, your name being sung by the Camp Nou crowd is a privilege you have to earn".

Barcelona return to action on Sunday when they travel to Levante in La Liga.
