Anthony Gordon has become a Barcelona cult hero already with his latest off-pitch decision

Anthony Gordon has made a superb start to life at Barcelona, registering three assists in his first three La Liga appearances - and he is making a significant impression off the pitch as well.

Gordon has quickly settled into life in Spain after his £69.3 million summer move from Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old came off the bench to provide two assists on Barcelona debut in a 5-0 win over Elche, and became the first player this century to register multiple assists on his La Liga debut.

His third assist, a backheel to Raphinha in Barca's 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano, even left fellow new signing Rodri stunned as he watched the ball go into the back of the net.

Gordon already has a nickname coined by the Barcelona faithful, as he is now known as 'Antoni Gros' - translated into English simply as 'Big Anthony'.

The England winger has been learning Spanish since his early days at Newcastle, and even decided to answer some questions in the language during his unveiling press conference in June.

But according to Spanish outlet SPORT, his learning hasn't stopped there.

They report that he is also learning Catalan, which is regarded as an 'own language' in Barcelona - the capital city of Catalonia - and is estimated to be able to be spoken by around 70 per cent of its population.

"He's also shown a keen interest in learning much more about Catalonia's native language, Catalan," the report states.

"The point is, Gordon doesn't want to be just passing through Barcelona and has amply demonstrated his desire to adapt to the Barca environment, as well as to those who were already part of the club before he arrived from Newcastle."

'It's really difficult...' - Anthony Gordon on learning Spanish

Gordon signed a five-year contract at Camp Nou to keep him at Barcelona until the summer of 2031.

He told The Telegraph that it took him just six lessons to be able to speak some fluent Spanish during his unveiling, and that he had ramped up his language learning since his Barca move was confirmed.

"It's difficult. People always see the end results and they assume it's easy because, obviously when you practice a little bit and it becomes easier," Gordon said.

"But it's really difficult because you're learning a completely new language. You're trying to translate everything you're thinking in English to Spanish. So it's really hard."

"I wouldn't say I am intellectually smart," he added. "As I said in the press conference, I always kind of spoke a little bit of Spanish with my Spanish physio [at Newcastle] for that reason."

Barcelona are next in action on Sunday when they travel to Estadio de Mestalla to take on Valencia. Gordon will be hoping to make his third consecutive start, having been picked to face Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao.
