Anthony Gordon smashes La Liga record on Barcelona debut after coming off the bench

It took Anthony Gordon just six minutes to break a long-standing La Liga record as the winger made an immediate impact on his Barcelona debut.

Gordon was named on the bench for Barca's La Liga opener against Elche on Sunday, with fellow summer signing Karim Adeyemi getting the nod after featuring in pre-season games against Birmingham and Al Ahly.

The former Newcastle United man had to wait for his opportunity but soon showed his class, assisting Raphinha to make it 3-0, just two minutes after replacing Adeyemi in the second half.

And four minutes later, the invigorated Gordon notched his second assist of the contest, delivering a perfectly weighted pass to Fermin Lopez, who made it 4-0 with a simple tap-in from close range.

In the meantime, Gordon etched his name into the history books, becoming the first player in the 21st century to provide two assists on his La Liga debut.

The 26-year-old is living his dream at the Catalan club. Speaking in the aftermath of Barcelona's emphatic 5-0 win over Elche, Gordon opened up about the welcome he's received from the squad.

"It was the perfect start," he said. "Five goals scored, no goals conceded. I'm very happy and thought we played some lovely football, scored some great goals and, more importantly, I thought the defenders made some excellent last-minute challenges and blocks, so overall extremely good."

"I feel so good," added Gordon. "I feel so good since I've arrived. I said in the interview then that the guys have made me feel so welcome. I feel at home already; the city is amazing, the people are so friendly and I think I will get better and better the longer I'm here."

Gordon went on to praise Adeyemi, who is expected to compete with Gordon for a place in Flick's starting line-up.

"It's always about the team first, especially with this club, but big congratulations to Kareem because he put in a great performance," added Gordon. "He got his first goal, he worked really hard in some defensive transitions, so I'm really happy for him."

Earlier this month, manager Hansi Flick gave an insight into Gordon's feelings towards joining Barca.

"From the very first phone call with Anthony Gordon, I could feel his excitement about joining Barcelona," he said, as per Fabrizio Romano. "He really wanted to come, and I'm very happy he's with us."

The winger will be hoping to feature for Barca in their next game, a home clash against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday (August 27).
