EFL club let 14 players leave after confirming retained list with huge summer overhaul planned

EFL club let 14 players leave after confirming retained list with huge summer overhaul planned

Sunderland have released 14 players after a disappointing Championship campaign.

Sunderland have announced their release list, with 14 players set to depart after a disappointing Championship campaign.

On Friday several players were left off Sunderland's retained list including Corry Evans and Bradley Dack.

Both Evans, 33, and Dack, 30, endured injury problems this season as the North East side missed out on a play-off spot.

Midfielder Evans captained Sunderland throughout the 2021-22 season, which culminated in promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

Dack, moreover, only arrived at the Stadium of Light on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers last summer.

Having been a fan favourite at Ewood Park he suffered a number of injury issues at Sunderland that restricted him to just one goal in 16 appearances.

Furthermore, Academy of Light graduates Ellis Taylor and Jack Diamond will also depart this summer, while loanees Mason Burstow and Callum Styles have returned to their parent Clubs, with Sunderland retaining an option to sign the latter permanently.

Beyond the senior side, Sunderland have also confirmed the Ben Creamer, Callum Wilson, Connor Pye, Daniel Obolo, Harry Gardiner, Jayden Sekete, Joe Ryder, Kailem Beattie, Michael Spellman and Thomas Chiabi will all depart the academy this summer.

Having led Sunderland to the Championship play-offs the previous year, Tony Mowbray was sacked in December with the club sitting in ninth.

He was replaced by Michael Beale, but six defeats in his opening 12 games, including a 3-0 home FA Cup humbling to rivals Newcastle United, saw him axed by February.

Mike Dodds was then placed in interim charge for the remainder of the season, which saw Sunderland ultimately finish in a disappointing 16th.

Will Still and Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl are two names that have been linked to the Stadium of Light in recent weeks.
