A respected Manchester United journalist has revealed what 'senior club officials' have told him about their pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres.

Man United are in the market for new talent, having already acquired Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

More signings ahead of the new season are expected as the Red Devils released nine players from their squad on Monday.

A new No.9 is believed to be on the club's radar following the drab form of Rasmus Hojlund, who only managed four Premier League goals last season.

Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta have been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.

Not to mention Sporting CP star Gyokeres, who played under Amorim before his Man United appointment.

Gyokeres is attracting plenty of interest, with Arsenal and Chelsea also thought to be keeping tabs on his situation.

Clubs in Saudi Arabia are also after him but he has turned down a lucrative switch to play in the Middle East.

Sporting CP are demanding a huge payment to sanction his sale, angering Gyokeres in the process.

Reports claim Man United, who have no European football to offer, have been strongly with the Swedish international but that doesn't appear to be the case, according to Andy Mitten.

Mitten claims to have spoken to 'senior club officials' at Man United and revealed Gyokeres' name wasn't mentioned.

On talkSPORT, he revealed: "I spoke to senior people at the club. He wasn’t a name that I heard..."

"I’m not saying it’s not going to happen, but I’ve got no evidence that they’re trying to sign him."

The 27-year-old, who was on the books at Brighton before enjoying a prolific campaign at Coventry City, scored an impressive 54 goals across all competitions last season, emerging as one of Europe's most lethal forwards.

It followed a superb first season in Portugal, where he netted 43 goals in 50 games under Amorim.
