Jamie Carragher aims cheeky seven-word dig at Liverpool's transfer business and it's instantly gone viral

The former Liverpool centre-back had his say on Arne Slot's side's dealings in this summer's transfer window.

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has aimed a cheeky dig at the club on social media, and it’s got fans talking.

Carragher, 47, is Liverpool’s second-highest appearance maker behind Ian Callaghan and won 11 major honours – one UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, three League Cups, two FA Community Shields, one UEFA Cup, and two UEFA Super Cups - during his 17-year career at the Reds.

These days, he and Gary Neville lead Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage, with both not afraid to give their takes on all things football.

And like everyone associated with the Reds, Carragher was delighted with their 2024/25 campaign, during which they lifted the Premier League title.

This summer, Slot has added seven players to what was already a strong squad.

Florian Wirtz arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee, which could rise to £116.5m. Full-backs Milos Kerkez (£40m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m) signed from Bournemouth and Leverkusen, respectively. Hugo Ekitike (up to £79m) completed a move from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Goalkeepers Armin Pecsi (£1.5m), Freddie Woodman (free) and Giorgio Mamardashvili (up to £29m) will also back up first-choice goalkeeper Alisson.

But Carragher seemingly addressed the elephant in the room in regard to a potential problem position.

On Friday morning, Liverpool unveiled their home and away kits for the 2025/26 campaign, with Carragher donning the home shirt in a post on social media.

Carragher accompanied the photograph with the caption: “The new @LFC centre back finally arrives!”

And some supporters think this was a dig at Liverpool for their lack of recruitment in the heart of defence.

One fan said: “Finally, a new centre-back.”

Another joked: “VVD will be in trouble now.”

A third quipped: “Imagine you and Joe Gomez, Liverpool will be fighting relegation battles like Manchester United.”

But jokes aside, Liverpool have just three senior centre-backs at the club – Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez – while Rhys Williams, who spent last season on loan at Morecambe, has been linked with a permanent move away. Holding midfielder Wataru Endo can also fill in at centre-back when required.

A suspension or long-term injury could prove detrimental to Liverpool’s title defence.

Carragher previously called for his former club to sign a left-sided centre-back in January.

The 47-year-old told The Overlap: “Liverpool haven’t got a player that every other club has; a left-sided defender who can play centre-back or left-back.

“Arsenal have Calafiori, United have Martinez, Chelsea have Colwill, City have Nathan Ake and Gvardiol, even Tottenham have Van de Ven, who can do a little bit at left-back.”

Which centre-back could Liverpool sign?

Most fans are currently following the Alexander Isak saga, as the Swede has been linked with a switch to Anfield from Newcastle. However, the Reds are also linked with England and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. Earlier this week, BBC Sport reported that the Reds have a "genuine interest in Guehi this summer", although "Liverpool don't want to get drawn into a long saga over Guehi's valuation and will only move if they believe the fee represents that the defender can join them for nothing next summer". Palace want £40m for the player but Liverpool would prefer to pay less than that figure.
