Jamie Carragher praised for bombshell Liverpool take live on Sky Sports as Arne Slot claim made
Jamie Carragher has got fans talking with a rather outlandish take about Liverpool during an appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
Carragher was joined by former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville for the first MNF of the 2026/27 campaign, with the pair also flanked by usual host Dave Jones.
As expected, it didn’t take long for Carragher to discuss Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle, with Andoni Iraola’s side snatching a point courtesy of Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage time penalty at St James’ Park.
Several Liverpool players have been criticised since Sunday’s clash, with 2025 summer signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, who both struggled, bearing the brunt of the criticism given their combined price tag of over £200million.

And Carragher believes the 2025/26 summer transfer window could “set Liverpool back a year or two”.
Carragher then referred to Neville’s comments about the likes of Isak and Wirtz “getting off lightly” last season, as much of the attention was on then-head coach Arne Slot and his style of play rather than underperforming new players.
“Yes, it’s one game of Iraola, but we are talking 12 months of underperformance from all of these players, except him [Hugo Ekitike],” Carragher said.
Liverpool spent a combined £445million on Isak, Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Giovanni Leoni ahead of last season.
The former Liverpool captain added: “If this doesn’t change in the next two or three months under Iraola, I think we are going to be looking at that [Liverpool’s summer 2025 transfer window] as the worst in Premier League history when you consider the fees for these players and how much... what it was going to do for Liverpool.
“The idea of these players was to create almost a dynasty for Liverpool. Let’s not forget Liverpool won the league two years ago. These were supposed to do what City have done in the past few years... win two or three leagues in five years.”

And fans waded in with their thoughts on social media.
One said: “That window genuinely gets worse every time you look at it. £445m with such little returns? They signed two strikers for £200m+ who have to directly compete with each other. £116m on a #10 who is worse than Szoboszlai, who they had there in the first place. Impressively awful.”
Another added: “He’s right. Kerkez and Frimpong look horrible. Wirtz and Isak don’t look like difference-makers at all. Leoni had an ACL injury, as good as he looked in that game. Mamar can’t kick a ball to save his life, and Ekitike, the best of them all, had the worst injury you can have in sports.”
A third claimed: “Arguably the best pundit in the world.”
A fourth commented: “I totally agree with Carragher if things don't change!”
While a fifth said: “Can't argue with anything he's said there, yeno, absolutely spot on. It's genuinely remarkable how we're worse off after £445m.”
Liverpool return to action at home against Nottingham Forest on August 29.
