Cristiano Ronaldo left 'in tears' after unthinkable scenario plays out in Al Nassr game

A devastated Cristiano Ronaldo didn't know whether to laugh or cry after Al Nassr came agonisingly close to sealing their first Saudi Pro League title since 2019.

Coming into Tuesday night's game against second-placed Al Hilal, a win for Al Nassr would have handed them a seven-point lead at the top of the table with just one game remaining.

A first-half strike from Mohamed Simakan gave the hosts a one-goal advantage and, after dominating much of the game, it looked like Jorge Jesus' side would secure an early title win.

But in a dramatic turn of events, a calamitous own-goal from goalkeeper Bento with just 10 seconds left to play prevented Al Nassr from getting their hands on the trophy ahead of next week's finale against Damac.

A 1-1 draw means Al Nassr sit five points ahead of Al Hilal, who have a game in hand.

As a result of their failure to secure an early title win, a devastated Cristiano Ronaldo cut an emotional figure on the bench, with footage of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner 'in tears' at the full-time whistle.

Taking to social media after Tuesday's game, Ronaldo remained positive. "The dream is close," he wrote. "Heads up, we have one more step to take! Thank you all for the amazing support tonight."

As mentioned above, Al Nassr still hold a five-point advantage with one game remaining. A win over struggling Damac in the final match of the campaign will secure Ronaldo's first league title in Saudi Arabia.

Cristiano Ronaldo has already addressed rumours regarding his future at Al Nassr

Back in February, Ronaldo made headlines as he refused to play for Al Nassr as part of a protest against the club's lack of action in the winter transfer window.

The 41-year-old was reportedly angry with the fact that Karim Benzema was allowed to terminate his Al Ittihad contract before moving to Al Hilal.

However, he later insisted that he wanted to stay with the Saudi Pro League leaders.

"I'm very happy," he told Saudi broadcaster Thmanyah. "As I say so many times, I belong to Saudi Arabia. It's a country that has welcomed me very well, and my family and my friends. I'm happy here, I want to continue here.

"The most important thing is we keep pushing [for the league title], we are there at the top. We do our job, we win, make pressure, let's see at the end of the season."
