David Moyes' ill-fated Man United spell was 'completely ruined' after he made huge changes

David Moyes, who succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson, was only in charge of Manchester United for 10 months before he was axed from Old Trafford.

West Ham manager David Moyes was “completely ruined” at Old Trafford after he made key changes during his disastrous spell at Manchester United.

That is according to ex-United masseuse Rod Thornley, who opened up on Moyes’ ill-fated spell after he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford hot seat.

Moyes left Everton in 2013 and inked a six-year deal with United after Ferguson hand-picked his fellow Scotsman as the Red Devils’ next manager.

The 59-year-old only lifted the Community Shield with United and wouldn’t see out the full 2013-2014 season at Old Trafford.

Moyes’ calamitous run at United came to an end after only 10 months in charge, with club legend Ryan Giggs replacing him as interim manager at the time.

Speaking on the Under The Cosh podcast, Thornley hilariously suggested that there were “two things” that “completely ruined” Moyes at United.

And of those changes from Moyes included scraping chips from the United canteen.

“He stopped me doing 40-yard pings with Wayne [Rooney] and the chips, getting rid of the chips from the canteen,” Thornley said.

“I think those are the two things that completely ruined him at United.”

Moyes had inherited Ferguson’s 2012-13 Premier League-winning squad, but former United chief executive David Gill also left his post at the time in summer 2013.

The former Everton manager struggled to bring in key summer transfer targets at United and Marouane Fellaini was his only major signing in that window.

Thornley believes that United legend Ferguson “knew what he was leaving behind” with the squad he left for Moyes.

“David Gill was huge leaving, as equally big [as Ferguson’s departure],” he added.

“For everything off the pitch. Moyes came in and tried his thing, he was fine, he was quite indecisive as a bloke. It just didn’t work out for him.

“I think Sir Alex knew what he was leaving behind. No disrespect to that team who won the league in 2012-13 but they weren’t a great team.

“They won the league by 10 points but they were not a great team. Sir Alex just got the best out of them.”
