Phil Foden couldn't resist making gesture towards booing Man Utd fans as he left Old Trafford

Phil Foden aimed a not-so-subtle dig at a group of jeering Manchester United fans as he walked out of Old Trafford following Manchester City's controversial 1-0 win.

It was an eventful afternoon for the Stockport-born midfielder, who was sent off in the 23rd minute of Sunday's derby after lashing out at Bruno Fernandes.

Foden fell on top of the ball after being challenged by Fernandes, who soon made contact with the City midfielder as he attempted to kick the ball away.

Fernandes appeared to catch the bottom of his back and moments later, a frustrated Foden lashed out as he lay on the ground. In fact, he kicked out at Fernandes with both feet.

Moments later, the United captain went down clutching his stomach and referee Michael Oliver brandished a straight red card.

Foden became the first City player to be sent off in the derby since 2006, but clearly he didn't let the incident dampen his spirits as City walked away from Old Trafford with three points.

After the full-time whistle, Foden received a hostile reception from a group of United supporters as he walked towards City's team bus.

As you can see in the footage below, the 26-year-old responded by gesturing a "1-0" scoreline with his fingers. In fact, he did so for at least 10 seconds before walking out of shot.

Going back to Foden's red card, Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca believes the decision to dismiss his player was the right one.

"The plan changed completely after the red card," said Maresca.

"The fighting spirit, the effort and the players' togetherness were superb. Honestly, I think it was a deserved red card (for Phil Foden), but the same applies to Bruno Fernandes, the Manchester United player, in the same play, and not only to us."

Maresca added: "We didn't allow any counter-attacks or leave spaces behind us. It's a special match for everyone, for the fans, the club and the manager, but this isn't the right moment to think about myself. I'm thinking about the team and about collecting three incredible points."
