Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in the World Cup worst XI, Argentina also feature

Ronaldo was part of the Portugal squad who were knocked out of the quarter-finals of the World Cup by Morocco.

Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup has gone from bad to worse, as he's been named in the Worst XI from the tournament, along with one Argentina player.

Right now Ronaldo is unemployed and tending to his hurt feelings, after his long term rival Lionel Messi won the World Cup.

For many people, Messi's victory on Sunday, in which he scored twice, and also put away his penalty in the shoot-out, ended any debate as to who is the greatest of all time.

Previously a lack of international success had got in his way, according to some, but he's now won the Copa America and World Cup in back-to-back years,

For Ronaldo it wasn't the World Cup tournament that he'd have wanted, especially for what is expected to be his final attempt at winning it.

Despite becoming the first man to score at five of them, he was dropped from the starting line up for Portugal's knockout stages and failed to score as a substitute in either the last 16 or quarter-final, meaning he's still never scored in a World Cup knockout game.

Despite his number one cheerleader claiming he was the player you'd call on if you needed to score a goal, he wasn't able to make a difference when coming on against Morocco, and Fernando Santos' side went out.

Now things have got even worse for the former Manchester United striker, as he's been named in the Worst XI from Qatar, using Sofascore's ratings for each game.

The 37-year-old surprisingly has a World Cup winner as a strike partner in the team, with Argentina's Lautaro Martinez also in the team based on statistics.

The worst XI.

Ronald managed just one goal in the tournament, a penalty against Ghana, and he was accused of cheating to win the spot kick in the first place.

Despite winning the tournament, Martinez didn't have a good time in the Middle East at all, starting in Lionel Scaloni's first choice team but eventually being replaced by Julian Alvarez.

The Manchester City striker had a much better time in the team, scoring twice in the semi-final, and made the team into a more potent attacking threat.

Martinez came on in the final but his problems continued, missing a couple of chances, including a header right at the end of extra time.

He wasn't needed for the shoot-out, but the Inter Milan forward may well have been next in line, if France hadn't failed to convert two of their penalties.

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is the other most prominent member of the team, with the African side being knocked out by England in the last 16.

It has been a really poor few months for the Chelsea keeper, who made a number of high profile mistakes and lost his place as the number one to Kepa Arrizabalaga, before the Spaniard got injured.

These players will all be glad that the domestic season is starting up again so soon, and they can forget about their problems from Qatar.

Well, apart from Ronaldo, who is currently trying to find a new team.
