Cristiano Ronaldo's account 'likes' video accusing FIFA of helping Argentina at World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo's account on Instagram has appeared to 'like' a social media post that accuses FIFA of being "one of the most corrupt institutions on planet earth" after Argentina reached the World Cup final.

This summer, Ronaldo played in his last World Cup for Portugal, who were eliminated by eventual champions Spain at the last-16 stage of the competition.

Argentina, meanwhile, reached Sunday's final in New Jersey following a controversial path to the showpiece event, which included a much-talked-about 3-2 win over Egypt at the last-16 stage.

In fact, Egypt manager Hossam Hassan accused governing body FIFA of bias towards Lionel Messi after several incidents went against them, including Mostafa Ziko’s second-half goal being ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

“It’s all about money. They want Messi to stay in the tournament,” said Hassan. “In football, many things happen off the pitch because of interests. What happened was unfair. Egypt deserved to qualify. We were the better team."

Accusations continued when Argentina needed help from VAR to reduce Switzerland to 10 players in the quarter-final, before a number of decisions went in their favour against England in the semi-final.

Amid the fallout, Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to like a post shared by Spanish news channel Espejo Publico which suggested favourtism towards Argentina.

In the clip that was posted ahead of Sunday's final, Spanish journalist Pilar Rodriguez Losantos said, as per Goal: "Argentina should have been eliminated at least five matches ago. They are only still in the tournament thanks to help from FIFA, which is one of the most corrupt institutions on planet earth.

"So, I'm not afraid of Argentina at all; I'm more afraid of Gianni Infantino. I think we're not going to play against Argentina, but against the whole of FIFA, who want to hand the World Cup to Lionel Messi."

Ruben Amon, who also appeared on the show, described FIFA as a "mafia" and dubbed it a "shameful organisation".

As per the Mail, he said: "Ticket prices have turned what was once a sport for the masses into an experience reserved for the elite; football is a people's sport that has ceased to be one.

"I consider FIFA to be an abject, mafia-like, and shameful organisation. Football survives despite the conduct of this disturbing body, and we will still enjoy the match, but not because of the conditions FIFA has imposed."

Cristiano Ronaldo confirms he has played in his last World Cup

Earlier this month, Ronaldo's dream of winning the biggest prize in football came to an end in Dallas as Portugal were eliminated from this summer's World Cup by Spain.

Speaking in his post-match interview, the 41-year-old confirmed that he has played his last World Cup game.

“I am sad to leave like this but I have given everything, always given my best,” Ronaldo said. “I go with a clear conscience. This is football, it is the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. You have to carry on.

"It was my last World Cup, but as far as the rest of it is concerned: there will be time to think, to be with my family, [I will] not make decisions in the heat of the moment," he added.
