Cristiano Ronaldo mocked during Spain's World Cup victory ceremony as footage goes viral

A joke about Cristiano Ronaldo was made during a ceremony involving Spain's World Cup winners on Monday, as thousands of fans gathered in Madrid to celebrate their recent success.

After beating Argentina in the final, Luis de la Fuente's side were welcomed home by around two million fans in Spain's capital city.

The 26-man squad, as well as the coaching staff, met Spain's royals and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez before parading through the streets of Madrid on an open-top bus that boasted the message: “Stars shine together”.

They eventually arrived at Cibeles Square, one of Madrid's most renowned landmarks, where 120,000 supporters gathered to watch the players be introduced on stage.

As you can see in the footage below, players could be seen sporting t-shirts with the words "Somos Campeones" sprayed on the front, which translates to "We Are Champions."

Before entering the stage, every player was given a darts-esque introduction by host Raul Ramos, who has got people talking after he made a quip about Cristiano Ronaldo during the ceremony.

While introducing Crystal Palace's Yeremy Pino, the host said: “Back in Lomo del Chentchi, they used to call Pino ‘Cristiano Ronaldo.’ The only difference? Pino has a World Cup.”

Ramos’ joke drew a smattering of laughs from both the audience and his fellow co-host.

Ronaldo and Portugal were eliminated at the round of 16 stage by eventual champions Spain after Arsenal's Mikel Merino scored the only goal of the game in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

Speaking in the aftermath of that game, an emotional Ronaldo confirmed that it would be his last World Cup.

"I'm sad to leave the World Cup this way," he said. "As I said yesterday, I gave it my all, and I leave with a clear conscience. That's the life of a footballer. You have to move forward.

"It was my last World Cup, yes. But as for the rest, there's time to think, to be with my family, and not say things in the heat of the moment."

He added: "I've given my all. I've won three titles with Portugal. The 2016 [Euros] title is on the same level as a World Cup."

It was a record-breaking tournament for the 41-year-old, who has scored 146 goals in 232 appearances for Portugal since making his debut in a 1-0 win over Kazakhstan in 2003.

He became the oldest-ever player to score in the World Cup knockouts, taking the record off former teammate Pepe, who found the back of the net at 39 years and nine months, after scoring against Croatia.
