Donald Trump went off script during his White House speech to congratulate Rory McIlroy in a brutally awkward moment.

On Tuesday evening, US President Trump welcomed dozens of guests to the White House during an official state dinner with King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Among the guests present was Northern Irish golf star McIlroy, who recently became only the fourth man to win back-to-back Masters titles at Augusta.

McIlroy boasted a considerable lead for the majority of Masters weekend but had to deal with pressure from Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young and Justin Rose to secure his second green jacket.

The feat was watched by millions of viewers across the world, including Trump who took to social media to congratulate the 36-year-old on the win shortly after.

But it's clear Trump didn't feel that he'd shown his appreciation enough as he took a slight detour during his speech at the state dinner to ask McIlroy to stand up so he could commend him for his courage at Augusta.

Trump said: “The entire world has been uplifted by this distinct and special character we share. This unstoppable daring, this unconquerable courage. It really is, it’s unconquerable.

“Speaking of that, where’s Rory McIlroy? Can you stand up Rory, will you, please?

“That was unconquerable courage. That was very good Rory. I don’t know if that helps him talking about how wonderful the speech… but I had to interrupt my speech because I watched that man win a tournament that was a tough one.

“Congratulations, very proud of you.”

While the remainder of the state dinner applauded McIlroy as he stood up to accept the praise, you could tell the golf star was a tad uncomfortable in the awkward moment.

Rory McIlroy ignores Donald Trump request ahead of White House visit

Despite visiting Trump at the White House for the state dinner, McIlroy will not be present at this week’s Cadillac Championship, which is being hosted at Trump Doral National resort.

The golf course is located just 90 miles, about a 20-30-minute flight, from the McIlroy's stunning home in Jupiter, Florida.

His decision not to play comes as he enjoys a break from the course following the Masters, despite Trump himself expressing his excitement about seeing McIlroy play at Doral.

"Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something which few people would be able to even think about doing. With each year, Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND! I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral."

Instead, it is expected that McIlroy will make his return at the Truist Championship, taking place from May 7–10 at Quail Hollow, ahead of the next major - the PGA Championship - on May 14.
