Rory McIlroy has pulled out of another golf event despite Donald Trump's message following his win at The Masters.

At Augusta National this year, McIlroy became the first back-to-back winner of The Masters since Tiger Woods, becoming one of only four players ever completing the impressive feat.

The Northern Irishman held his nerve despite pressure from the likes of Cameron Young, Justin Rose and Scottie Scheffler to further cement himself as one of the sport's greatest ever players.

Since then, McIlroy appears to have been enjoying some time away from the spotlight, taking a brief hiatus from the sport and withdrawing from several events in the weeks following the Masters.

And now, it has been confirmed that he is set to miss another event, the new Cadillac Championship, despite US President Trump's message to McIlroy following his win at the Masters directly mentioning the event.

The Cadillac Championship is scheduled to get underway on April 30 at the Trump National Doral course, one of 16 golf venues owned by American president.

Despite McIlroy taking some time away from the sport after his win at Augusta, it was widely expected that he would return for the signature event, with Trump himself acknowledging it in a social media post following The Masters.

"Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something which few people would be able to even think about doing. With each year, Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND! I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral.

"The quality of Professional Golfers today has become extraordinary, each and every one of them. They should all be proud of the way they played at The Masters this weekend!”

Unfortunately for Trump he will have to wait until May to see McIlroy return to the golf course, as the 36-year-old now has just two more events to best prepare for the next major - the PGA Championship - on May 14.

His most likely return will come at the Truist Championship, taking place from May 7–10 at at Quail Hollow, a course that has seen him win on four occasions.

Rory McIlroy's relationship with Donald Trump explained

Alongside enjoying being a fan of McIlroy, Trump has had the pleasure of playing alongside the world no.2 on several occasions.

Speaking about playing with the US president back in February 2025, McIlroy said: "I played golf with him a few weeks ago It was great. It was really good. It was really good.

“I thought we had a good discussion. I learned that he’s not a fan of the LIV format.

"I was like, but you’ve hosted their events. He’s like, yeah, but it doesn’t mean that I like it. So, I think he’s on the (PGA) Tour side.”

However, despite playing golf with Trump on several occasions, McIlroy released a statement on social media back in 2017 to make clear that it does not mean he endorses him or his politics.

"I don't agree with everything my friends or family say or do, but I still play golf with them," he wrote on X, formally Twitter.

"Last week, I was invited to play golf with the president of the United States. Whether you respect the person who holds the position or not, you respect the office that he holds."

He claimed that the game was "not an endorsement, nor a political statement of any kind".

"It was, quite simply, a round of golf," he wrote.
