Fabrizio Romano claims Ruben Amorim has demanded Manchester United strengthen one key position after seeing his new side in competitive action for the first time.

Amorim experienced a tricky start to life as United head coach, with his side held to a 1-1 draw by Ipswich Town on Sunday evening in his first match since replacing sacked manager Erik ten Hag.

United scored after just two minutes through Marcus Rashford, but they failed to kick on and were made to pay when Omari Hutchinson equalised shortly before half-time.

Speaking after the game, former Sporting boss Amorim called for patience and said his side would have to "suffer" before they improved in his new system.

However, the Portuguese was reportedly left frustrated by several key players in the match including Diogo Dalot, Joshua Zirkzee, Rasmus Hojlund, and Rashford, according to Owen Hargreaves – who was pitchside at Portman Road.

Meanwhile, The Sun report that Amorim gave his players an underwhelming match rating during his post-game dressing room speech.

United started the match with an unfamiliar defensive line-up, with Jonny Evans, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in a back three flanked by Dalot at left wing-back and Amad Diallo on the right.

Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia started on the bench and Fabrizio Romano claims Amorim has demanded the club sign a new left-back as a 'priority' signing in 2025.

"Manchester United WILL sign a new left-back or left wing-back," Romano said on his YouTube channel.

"Ruben Amorim is very happy with Diogo Dalot in terms of player, professional, top leader – he is very happy. But they need a player who can cover that position on a regular basis so Dalot can play on the right. That is his position.

"Left-back remains a top priority and from what I'm hearing, even after the Ipswich game, the message from Ruben Amorim to Manchester United was that we need a player in that position in 2025.

"It could be in January or the summer, based on opportunities, price and several other factors. But Manchester United want to go for a player in that position."

Romano added that United are monitoring several potential targets including Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez and Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, who has also been linked with Real Madrid.

Davies is out of contract at the end of the season and is able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from the start of January.
