Liverpool are reportedly ‘interested’ in signing a highly rated European striker but could face competition from Manchester United, Arsenal, and AC Milan during the January transfer window.

Arne Slot’s side’s Premier League title defence has not gone as anticipated, with new signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak struggling to make a positive impact on the champions’ fortunes so far this term.

The Swedish striker, who is set to be out for at least a couple of months after sustaining a fractured leg in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Spurs on December 20, has registered just three goals in 16 appearances since arriving from Newcastle United for a British record fee of £125 million in September.

Meanwhile, Wirtz has just one goal in 23 Liverpool outings since signing from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million in June.

Of Liverpool’s seven summer recruits, only Hugo Ekitike has justified his price tag - £69 million - by netting 11 times in 24 appearances for the Merseyside club, while his fellow new boys Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have yet to produce their best form in a Liverpool shirt.

And despite spending the best part of £450 million on transfers just last summer, the Reds could be in the market this winter.

With Isak both out of form and now injured, the Reds may look to bring in reinforcement in the final third.

As reported by Italian outlet Gazzetta, Liverpool are among several Premier League teams interested in Juventus and Serbia striker Dusan Vlahovic.

AC Milan are also keen, while both Man United and Arsenal have also been linked with the player in previous transfer windows.

The Mirror reports that the Serbian, who has scored 64 times in 162 apperances for Juve, will be available to negotiate pre-contract agreements with clubs outside of Italy come January 1, with the Gunners previously showing interest in the player three years ago, while he was still at Fiorentina.

An issue for both Arsenal and Liverpool, though, may be Vlahovic’s reported current €534,231 (£466,000) per week salary.

If the 25-year-old retained the same salary at Arsenal or Liverpool, it would make him both clubs’ highest earner.

Back in September, Gazzetta reported on United’s interest in a January move for Vlahovic, but the club’s interest appears to have cooled as the winter window approaches.
