What is 'solidarity' payment Liverpool are paying in £130m Alexander Isak deal

The Alexander Isak deal includes a 'solidarity' payment.

Liverpool are paying Newcastle United a 'solidarity' payment to sign Alexander Isak. What is a 'solidarity' payment?

Liverpool have finally reached an agreement to sign Isak from Newcastle after months of speculation this summer.

He is expected to miss out on millions despite securing his dream switch to Anfield.

The deal is worth a whopping £130 million, which is a British-record fee - surpassing Chelsea's £106 million signing of Enzo Fernandez in January 2023.

The package includes a 'solidarity' payment of £5 million.

£5 million has been set aside for clubs that helped develop and contribute to the Swede's training between the ages of 12 and 23.

That means Swedish side AIK, Eredivisie team Willem II, Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund and La Liga club Real Sociedad will receive a small sum of money from the deal.

Newcastle could also pocket a portion of the 'solidarity' payment given Isak joined the club at the age of 22.

Isak began his footballing career with AIK. He came through the club's youth academy before breaking into the first-team.

He then joined Dortmund, where he enjoyed a loan spell in the Netherland's top flight with Willem II.

The 25-year-old signed for Sociedad in the summer of 2019 before moving to Newcastle for £63 million.

Isak scored 62 goals in 109 matches for Newcastle, including 23 goals in 32 games in last season's Premier League campaign.

Considering Liverpool's firepower, he will be looking for an even bigger haul this season even though he has missed the first three league games of the new season.

Isak, who did not feature in Newcastle's pre-season, has not played any of the club's first three league games this season.

But he has been named in Sweden's squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.

He is in line to get some minutes ahead of joining Liverpool, who resume their campaign on September 14 against Burnley.

Liverpool have won each of their opening three league fixtures of the new season.
