Xabi Alonso has been installed as the new favourite for a Premier League job after his departure from Real Madrid.
Alonso took the reins at his former club in May, leaving Bayer Leverkusen to replace Carlo Ancelotti after he agreed to become the new Brazil boss.
However, pressure soon piled on the Spaniard with reports of players not responding to his methods and after 34 games at the helm, his tenure came to a premature end.
A day after losing the Supercopa de Espana to Barcelona, Real published a statement confirming Alonso's exit.

The 15-time European champions said that Alonso left via mutual agreement and "will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club".

Alvaro Arbeloa, also formerly of Liverpool and Real, has been appointed as Los Blancos' new manager.
In a statement released since the news was released, Alonso described coaching Real as “an honour and thanks the club, players and fans "for their trust and support" as well as saying he leaves with "respect, gratitude, and the pride of having done my best".

But Alonso may not be out of work for too long. With Betano, Alonso is the new favourite to replace Thomas Frank at Spurs after the Dane's difficult start to life in North London.

Meanwhile, former boss Mauricio Pochettino, currently in charge of the US national team, is a 16/1 shout to return to Spurs for a second spell.

At Real, Alonso had a 70.59% win ratio, winning 24 of his 34 games and losing six. But with Barcelona four points clear at the top of La Liga, Real's top brass have made the change and left Alonso in limbo.

At Leverkusen, the 44-year-old led the club to a historic Bundesliga triumph - going the whole 2023/24 season unbeaten.
Spurs are currently 14th in the Premier League table, losing eight of their 21 games.
