The Premier League Team of the Season according to stats only includes three Manchester City players

The Premier League Team of the Season according to stats only includes three Manchester City players

City have ended up running away with the Premier League for the third year in-a-row but that doesn't mean they're statistically superior.

Martin Odegaard and Mohamed Salah are the surprise omissions from the Premier League Team of the Season based on stats, and only three Manchester City players make it in.

The final week of the league season is upon us and by this time next week we'll know which teams are in which European competitions and who is in what division.

Manchester United can tie up the final Champions League place on Thursday against Chelsea but there's still Europa League and Conference League to decide.

Everton, Leicester City and Leeds will be scrambling to stay in the top tier and throughout the Bank Holiday weekend there's also Football League play offs.

The beginning of the calendar year might be awards season for film and television but in football the ending of the season kicks it all off.

Erling Haaland has predictably already picked up one award and on Monday night Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were handing out fictional gongs.

That included picking their team of the year, and between them the warring pundits actually only picked six of the same players.

Both were criticised for their picks and they also got everything massively wrong, according to the stats anyway, with WhoScored.com pointing us all in the right direction with their team of the season.

Only Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and the record smashing Haaland have made it from the Premier League champions, which seems baffling.

The fact that Arsenal are only represented by Bukayo Saka might also surprise people considering Mikel Arteta's team pushed City so hard.

Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw are involved for Manchester United with Newcastle United's excellent defensive record helping Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar into the team.

Most people would struggle not to include Harry Kane in their teams, though somehow Neville managed it, and the Tottenham Hotspur striker obviously makes it in.

The most surprising inclusions though are for Brentford pair David Raya and Ethan Pinnock especially as seven teams have a better defensive record than Thomas Frank's team, including Chelsea.

Brentford have had an excellent season but you'd have thought that Brighton or Aston Villa players would have a better chance of making it in, or Liverpool or more from City.

What do we know, we aren't statisticians.
