Six Years Ago Today, Lionel Messi Broke The Record For Most Goals In A Year

Silly numbers...

Six years ago today, Lionel Messi scored his 85th and 86th goals of the year in a 2-1 win over Real Betis to break Gerd Muller's long-standing record.

Back in 1972, Muller scored an insane 85 goals for Germany and Bayern Munich and it looked like the record would never, ever be beaten.

But along came Messi and by the time 9 December came along, after his brace, he had notched 74 goals for Barcelona and a further 12 for Argentina.

As we know, however, Messi did not settle on 86 goals. He scored a further five goals to finish with an insane 91 goals in 2012.

He played 69 games in the year on the whole and in addition to his sensational goals tally, he also managed 29 assists for his teammates.

Quite frankly, the numbers are just silly and it's easily the best performance of a footballer in a single year.

After his brace against Spurs at Wembley in October, Messi ensured he has scored 40+ goals for 10 consecutive years - which again is another absurd record to have.

How the bloody hell did he finish fifth in this year's Ballon d'Or rankings? The game's gone...
