Jamie Carragher And Thierry Henry Agree On Ballon d'Or Winner

Jamie Carragher And Thierry Henry Agree On Ballon d'Or Winner

The two Premier League legends were discussing this year's Ballon d'Or winner during their coverage of Wednesday's Champions League games.

Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher have agreed on who they think will be this year's Ballon d'Or winner, though the Liverpool legend thinks someone else should win it.

The 2021 Ballon d'Or winner is set to be announced next week, although it's already had to be denied that the winner has been told ahead of time.

It'll be the first time in two years the award has been handed out, after the bizarre decision to cancel it because of Covid last year despite all club football being completed.

That decision stopped Robert Lewandowski winning the trophy and, fresh from breaking Gerd Muller's 49 year Bundesliga scoring record, the Bayern Munich is in the frame again.

Carragher thinks the Polish striker should win it but, like Henry, believes that Lionel Messi's Copa America triumph with Argentina will seal a seventh award for the PSG forward.

"Leo Messi will, I think [win it] because of finally winning the Copa America with Argentina," Henry said on CBS during their Champions League coverage.

"I think Lewandowski will win it, I think he deserves to win it," Carragher initially said, before accepting that Messi's first international trophy will play a part.

"I would pick Lewandowski, but I think Messi may just do it because people will feel he's finally done something for Argentina."

Messi didn't win any silverware with Barcelona last season, before his move to Paris, and the club had probably its worse season since the 34-year-old broke into the first team.

However the forward continued to impress for the Catalan giants and he was the only reason they remained in title contention for as long as they did.

He has scored more than 30 goals for Barca and PSG in 2021 and no one scored more than him at the Copa America, as he and Argentina finally put several near misses behind them to win the Copa America.

Lewandowski scored more goals than anyone else ever has in a Bundesliga season as Bayern Munich once again walked away with the domestic league.

However they failed to defend their Champions League title, losing to PSG in the quarter finals, when Lewandowski was out injured, and he also didn't have an impact at the Euros.

Karim Benzema has also been talked up as a potential Ballon d'Or winner this year, as has Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, who won the Champions League and Euro 2020 with club and country.
