Wrexham are reportedly preparing to make their biggest signing of the summer just days after manager Phil Parkinson was called out for his 'bitter' comments.

On Saturday, Wrexham brutally saw a 1-0 lead in their Championship season opener against Southampton disappear as the Saints scored two late goals to win the match.

After a busy summer that has seen the Welsh side break their transfer record on several occasions, the result put a sour taste to what was their first game in the second tier for 43 years.

Immediately after the match, manager Parkinson was criticised by fans for suggesting that the value of Southampton's substitutes contributed to the loss, despite the fact his side has spent around £11million this summer.

And it appears that Wrexham aren't done in the market yet, as a new report has linked the Red Dragons with a player who many would argue would be their biggest signing yet.

So far this summer, Wrexham have completed deals for Danny Ward, Conor Coady, Kieffer Moore, Ryan Hardie, George Thomason, Josh Windass, Lewis O'Brien and Liberato Cacace.

According to a report from Football League World, Manchester City defender Callum Doyle could be the next man to join Wrexham, with the Welsh side eager to battle Bundesliga side Hoffenheim for his signature.

The 21-year-old, who came through the City academy, is believed to be up for sale having spent four seasons away from the Etihad on loan with Sunderland, Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich City.

A report from The Athletic, has claimed that City would be willing to sell the youngster for around £10m after already turning down an offer from Hoffenheim.

It also claims that City would be willing to let Doyle join a Championship side on loan with an option or obligation to buy, leaving the door open for a move to Wrexham.

But Wrexham aren't the only Championship club interested, as Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich City are all prepared to rival the Welsh side after Doyle impressed during his loan spells with them.

Last season, Doyle made 40 appearances in the Championship for Norwich.
