A social media post went viral over the weekend, which showed a betting slip that is almost too good to be true. That's because it is.
It sounds simple enough: successfully predict the winners of six major competitions and bag yourself over £100,000 from a £21.45 stake. For one punter, it could be about to become a reality - but there is a huge catch.
X user @LeBro88 posted the image of a betting slip placed by his friend, which could result in an enormous six-figure payout this summer.
The accumulator is straightforward enough. Predict the outright winner of both the men's and women's UEFA Champions League, the winner of the UEFA Europa League, the winner of the UEFA Conference League, plus the outright winners of both the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. It is with that last one that the problem lies.
Advert
Barcelona Femeni won the women's Champions League at odds of 1.61, Paris Saint-Germain won the men's Champions League at 7.00, Aston Villa won the Europa League at 5.00 and Crystal Palace won the Conference League at 4.00. The bet also predicts Spain to win the World Cup at odds of 5.50.
There's just one problem: the outright winner of the Africa Cup of Nations. The bet backed Morocco to win the tournament at odds of 3.75, but that leg of the accumulator has already been classified as a loss.
Imagine having this acca! It is my mates and @bet365 will not reinstate it even though Morocco were awarded the AFCON! The cash out would be insane now after PSG beat Arsenal last night!!!!! pic.twitter.com/NeWvchaC1y

Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in a controversial final in January, which descended into chaos when Senegalese players refused to play after the hosts were awarded a stoppage-time penalty. After a lengthy delay, they returned to the pitch, only for Brahim Diaz to have his penalty saved before Pape Gueye scored an extra-time winner.
Then, in March, Morocco was declared the winner after the Confederation of African Football overturned the result of the final and declared Senegal had forfeited the match due to leaving the playing field for 17 minutes. It meant that hosts Morocco were subsequently awarded a 3-0 walkover victory.
CAF judged that Senegal had breached both Article 82 and Article 84 in the AFCON regulations, which state that if a team refuses to play or leaves the ground before the end of regulation time without the referee's authorisation, it will be considered the loser and eliminated from the competition. It also states that any team that violates those rules will be permanently eliminated and will lose the match 3-0.
That has created a confusing situation from a betting perspective, given that Senegal were the initial winners of the tournament, but it has subsequently been awarded to Morocco.
As the social media user pointed out, if the betting company reinstated the bet and kept it in play ahead of the World Cup, there would be a huge scope to cash out even if Spain didn't go on to win the tournament.
