Paddy Power paid out on Premier League result back in August and it backfired massively

The betting company will, no doubt, regret their decision almost eight months on.

Paddy Power paid out on punters’ bets after a result in the Premier League back in August – but this has now backfired.

The Irish betting company seemingly hedged their bets back in August after Everton, then managed by Sean Dyche, sustained a 4-0 away defeat against Tottenham Hotspur a week after losing 3-0 at home against Brighton in the season’s opening weekend.

Shortly after the Toffees’ shocking performance at Spurs, Paddy Power took to X and posted a statement confirming that they would be paying out early on the Merseyside club to be relegated to the Championship.

The statement read: “After today’s hammering, we thought we’d save everyone the bother of waiting… so we’ve paid out early on Everton to be relegated.”

At the time, this didn’t seem reckless given Everton's poor form.

However, Dyche parted company with Everton on January 9 following a torrid run of just one win in 11 games, with the team just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

He was replaced by David Moyes, who has since overseen an upturn in form from the Toffees.

Moyes, 61, has guided his side to five wins, six draws and four defeats in his 15 games in charge.

And Everton are now officially safe from relegation following Arsenal's 4-0 victory against Ipswich at Portman Road on Sunday.

Toffees supporters were quick to hit back at Paddy Power on X following the result.

One said: "Hope you got rinsed!"

Another added: "The person who authorised this must've been sacked by now."

A third explained: "Scenes you love to see."

Everton retaining their Premier League status means they will host top-flight football at their new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock near Liverpool city centre, come next season.

“I went to the stadium on Wednesday," Moyes said after Everton's 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest on April 12.

“I was hugely impressed by the bowl inside, it was steep, and I don’t think there looks to be a bad seat in the house to be honest. It looks easy to watch games, it was very good. The pitch has been dug up again, so I didn’t go right into the middle and look at it like that. There is still lots to get done on the inside yet.”
