Newcastle have reportedly set a new price which Liverpool must match if they want to sign Alexander Isak this summer.
Isak, 25, has been the subject of interest from Liverpool this week, with the two clubs also battling it out for Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, who now seems likely to join the Reds despite a reported £70m bid from Newcastle.
Interest in a move for Isak seemed to have cooled, but earlier today, the Sweden international was omitted from Eddie Howe’s squad for the Magpies’ 4-0 defeat against Celtic in Glasgow, Scotland.
It was initially reported that the reason for this was separate from the player’s future, with the club insisting that the decision was made to manage his minutes in pre-season following a recurring groin problem.

However, Howe added fuel to the rumours and panic among Newcastle fans with an odd post-match interview at Celtic Park.
“It was my decision," Howe said.
"He travelled back to Glasgow with us, but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him.

"The last thing he wanted is to be sat in the stand watching, that wasn't fair to him. But I'm confident he will be a Newcastle player come the end of the window."
He added: “Yes, I've had discussions with him, but that's not abnormal.
"I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him."
Later on Saturday, The Telegraph reported that the Premier League champions were willing to pay £120m for Isak.

However, Newcastle are ‘sticking rigidly to their £150m’ valuation despite it previously being widely reported that the club saw him as being worth £120m.
Newcastle’s proposed valuation of Isak is more than the highest transfer fee paid by a Premier League club – currently the £106 million Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
The Northeast club have signed just one first-team player so far this summer, with right winger Anthony Elanga arriving from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth a reported £52m.

Howe described Isak as “irreplaceable” after his side’s poor performance in Glasgow.
“I’d say we have a few players who are irreplaceable,” Howe said.
“Your top players are so hard to find. They are so hard to recruit and develop, and make them into those players.
“When you have them, you need to treasure them. We certainly as staff recognise his talent and ability. We are desperate to keep him as part of our team.

“It is difficult for me to sit here and give 100 per cent clarity on any player. I’d never sit here and do that. It is football, and you never know what can happen. All I can say is that Alex is happy at Newcastle, he loves the players and staff, and the team.”
