Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has revealed his son Kit’s latest “obsession” after the nine-year-old gave up football.

Wayne, 39, captained both England and Manchester United during his illustrious career before hanging up his boots in 2021.

Following his retirement, he embarked on a career in coaching and has since managed Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle.

The 39-year-old also regularly works as a pundit for Amazon Prime and BBC Sport and has recently been part of the broadcast team for Match of the Day.

But away from football, the ex-Everton man is a father of four children. Wayne and his wife, Coleen, whom he married in June 2008, have four sons together – Kai, 15, Klay, 12, Kit, 9, and Cass, 7.

Like most siblings, the boys have different interests despite their father being one of England’s greatest footballers.

The oldest of the four, Kai, is a talented footballer and currently plays for United’s academy. The 15-year-old has also featured for the Under-18 side and is a highly rated prospect.

Like his older brother, 12-year-old Klay also plays for United, while seven-year-old Cass is reportedly on Everton’s books like his father once was.

However, Kit has bucked the family trend and, according to Wayne, has decided against playing football as he looks to compete in another sport.

Speaking to The Sun in March, Coleen explained how Kit had “retired” from football.

"Kai, he's 15, and Klay, who's going to be 12 in May, they're both at the academy at Manchester United, they've been there for quite a few years now,” Coleen explained.

"The youngest, he goes in at Everton, he's just turned seven, but he absolutely loves it, and the third one, he's retired. He's retired a few times."

Coleen went on to reveal that Kit was a huge fan of darts, and he met PDC world champion Luke Littler earlier this year.

But according to Wayne, the youngster now has a new ‘obsession’ with another sport, and it may not be what you’d expect.

On Wednesday (September 3), Wayne posted a photograph of Kit holding a fish to X, accompanied by the caption “New obsession for Kit. Caught his biggest yet. Brilliant setup at @PartridgeLakes with really helpful staff, thank you”.
