Wayne Rooney Targets New Job but There's A Huge Problem

The Manchester United legend has struggled in his managerial career but is now eyeing a new role.

Wayne Rooney would like to take on a new job but there is a major problem holding him back.

After leaving Manchester United in 2017 as the club's all-time leading goalscorer, Rooney returned to his boyhood club, Everton, before spells with DC United and Derby County.

He retired from playing in 2021 and immediately took charge of Derby, who were relegated to League One in 2022 after being deducted 21 points.

Rooney resigned as Derby manager in 2022, before he returned to DC United, where his side failed to qualify for the MLS playoffs.

In October 2023, he took charge at Birmingham City with the club sitting sixth in the Championship.

But after three months in charge, he was sacked with the Blues 20th, and they went on to suffer relegation to League One.

A stint at Plymouth Argyle followed, but it was equally as disastrous, and Rooney was sacked in December 2024 with the team bottom of the Championship.

Since then, Rooney has yet to return to management and has instead focused on media work.

He now has his own show on the BBC and appears as a pundit for Match of the Day, as well as appearing on Amazon Prime's Champions League coverage.

But it has now emerged that Rooney has his eye on a different television role and would like to be a team captain on A Question of Sport.

According to The Sun, Rooney and cricketer James Anderson were team captains in a charity version of the quiz held at Cheadle Hulme School in Cheshire, which three of Rooney's children attend.

A source told the newspaper: “Tickets sold out quickly after word got around that Wayne was going to appear.

“He and Jimmy were brilliant and had the audience in stitches.”

They added: “Wayne is quite introverted but has enjoyed media work.

“He’d be up for A Question of Sport if the BBC brings it back.”

Sadly for Rooney, the BBC confirmed that they were axing the sports quiz show in December 2023 after more than 50 years on air.

The broadcaster told MailOnline: "Due to inflation and funding challenges, difficult decisions have to be made; therefore, Question of Sport is currently not in production at the moment."

For now, Rooney is focused on his BBC podcast, which is shown on the BBC, with new episodes released twice a week.

In his latest episode, he criticised Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk for their lack of leadership since signing new contracts last year.

After Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Brentford, the defending champions have now lost four consecutive league games for the first time since February 2021.

Meanwhile, Rooney's former club Manchester United made it three successive victories for the first time under Ruben Amorim, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 4-2.

Goals from Matheus Cunha, Casemiro and Bryan Mbeumo gave United a commanding lead before Brighton fought back to 3-2, but Mbeumo struck again in stoppage time to secure the win.
