Wayne Rooney has been handed a large tax rebate from HMRC as the Manchester United and England legend's estimated net worth has been revealed.

The now retired striker is the Old Trafford club's top scorer with 253 goals in 559 games for United, and was also England's top scorer with 53 strikes in 120 caps before his Three Lions total was surpassed by Harry Kane.

Rooney burst onto the scene with boyhood club Everton in 2002 and later moved to United for a reported overall transfer fee of £27m in 2004.

Over the next 13 years, Rooney would go on to win every club trophy with the Old Trafford club, the majority of which were under Sir Alex Ferguson's management.

Rooney won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Europa League, three League Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Old Trafford.

Rooney returned to Everton in 2017 before moving to MLS side DC United in 2018.

He returned to English football in 2019 with Derby County, with whom he retired from playing in 2021 after he was named manager of the Rams.

Rooney resigned from the Pride Park club in the summer of 2022 following the club's relegation to League One after falling into administration.

He then returned to former club DC United, before a return to English football again with a switch to Birmingham City.

However, it proved to be an ill-fated spell as Rooney lasted fewer than three months in the dugout at St Andrews and was sacked after winning only two of his 15 games in charge of the Blues.

Rooney took charge of Championship side Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2024, but departed the Pilgrims by mutual consent at the end of last year with the club sitting bottom of the table and four points from safety.

Since then, Rooney has been working mostly as a pundit and is yet to make a return to coaching or management.

He has received a boost through a tax rebate, it has now emerged.

According to The Sun, the former striker will receive an £800,000 windfall from HMRC after the company which he used for his football image rights was closed down.

The report says that Rooney has received a whopping £22.5m after the firm was liquidated and is due to receive further windfall when the process is completed - which means his estimated net worth now stands at £170m.

This was built upon his playing career which at one stage saw him earn £300,000 a week and through deals with the likes of Nike, Coca Cola and EA Sports, becoming a figure on the front cover of the FIFA games for many years.
