Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has reportedly landed a new job after stepping down as Plymouth Argyle head coach in December.

Rooney, 39, has worked as a head coach and pundit since hanging up his boots in 2021. His first coaching role came at Derby County in 2021 before spells at D.C United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth followed.

Aside from his coaching commitments, the former Manchester United and England forward has also regularly appeared as a pundit on The Overlap and Amazon Prime’s coverage of Champions League fixtures as well as Match of the Day.

In January, the Liverpudlian insisted that he wanted to continue coaching despite several setbacks and unsuccessful spells at clubs.

“I would like to go back in [to management],” Rooney said on Stick to Football.

“But it would have to be the right club.

“I'm not in a massive rush to go back in. There's different things that I'm looking at to try and get involved with... unless something was absolutely the right thing to do.

“Every club I've been at, I've put myself in a really challenging situation. I've had some great experiences, good ones, bad ones (and) you've always got that to fall back on.

“Sometimes you have got different ideas which you're trying to put across to the players, and maybe there's a bit of arrogance where you're thinking, ‘This is the right way’. Having better players helps.

“I'd have no problem dropping into an Under-21 team or going in as a coach... I'm still young enough to learn and develop. Just having a good group of players who were at a [good] level.”

However, Rooney’s stance appears to have changed with The Sun reporting on Sunday that the 39-year-old will be unveiled as a new regular pundit on BBC’s Match of the Day.

The report claims that he will be paid around £800,000 across a two-year period and will appear on coverage of the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the US, Canada and Mexico.

His contract reportedly contains the option of a further two-year extension.

This comes after Gary Lineker stepped back from presenting the weekly highlights shows in May.

Lineker, 64, who hosted MOTD for 26 years, will be replaced by Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates.
