New footage of Bruno Fernandes emerges moments before Phil Foden's controversial Man City red card

New footage has shown Bruno Fernandes appearing to inadvertently elbow Phil Foden shortly before the Manchester City midfielder was controversially sent off during the Manchester derby.

City managed to win 1-0 at Old Trafford despite being down to 10 players, with Manchester United not possessing a significant attacking threat until the very closing stages.

Erling Haaland scored the winning goal and, while his strike was the subject of a controversial offside decision to allow it to stand, there was also significant debate over Foden's sending off and whether, in actual fact, Fernandes' challenge seconds earlier was more severe.

New angle of Bruno Fernandes, Phil Foden incident emerges

Foden was sent off for violent conduct after kicking out at Fernandes while on the ground.

Referee Michael Oliver told the VAR room that he had given a red card on the field for a 'kick out into the body of Bruno', with VAR official Shaun Donohue stating that, in his opinion, there was a 'secondary movement' by Foden.

Fernandes escaped a red card despite kicking Foden in the lower back, which will likely have prompted the Manchester City midfielder's angry reaction.

But a new angle has emerged on social media which appears to show what caused the initial fracas between the pair.

As Foden is attempting to shield the ball from Fernandes, the United midfielder puts his arm across and appears to inadvertently elbow Foden in the back, causing the City midfielder to fall to ground.

While it is unclear whether referee Oliver would have deemed there to be enough force to award a free kick, or even show Fernandes a yellow card, the footage appears to add another layer to what prompted Foden's reaction.

How many matches will Phil Foden miss?

Foden will now be banned for three matches, which is the standard punishment for a violent conduct offence. Had it been a straight red card for another offence, he would have only served a one-match ban.

Suspensions are carried over into domestic cup competitions, meaning one of the games Foden will miss is City's Carabao Cup third round home tie against Norwich City on Thursday - a fixture he may not have played in regardless.

But the length of the ban means he now won't play football for a month, unless he earns what would be a surprise call-up to Thomas Tuchel's England squad. City play Sunderland in the Premier League on Sunday before the international break.

Their next fixture is away to Liverpool on October 11, meaning Foden will return to action for City's home Champions League clash against holders Paris Saint-Germain on October 14.

Taking to social media after City's 1-0 win, Foden wrote: "Unbelievable performance from the lads. Gutted I didn't get to play my part properly. Proud to be Blue."
