A Manchester United insider has issued an update on the club’s summer transfer plans, while also revealing the Red Devils’ stance on appointing Michael Carrick permanently.
Despite wasting a shedload of cash on underperforming players over the past decade or so, those at Old Trafford can confidently say that the 2025 summer transfer window was a success.
Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have all bolstered United’s attack, while Senne Lammens has proven a calming presence between the sticks, easing the previous anxiety surrounding Andre Onana’s lacklustre spell.
Since Carrick took interim charge of United following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January, the former midfielder has guided the side to eight wins, two draws and two losses in the Premier League, leading United to third place – a position that would secure Champions League qualification.

But according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, United are not resting on their laurels as they look ahead to the next summer transfer window.
The outlet claims that a top-class midfielder is top of United’s wish list, although it is possible that two players in that position could arrive at the club.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is highly regarded at Old Trafford, with the player having been of interest to the club last summer. United see the Cameroon international as a good fit after analysing his passing, ground coverage and possession-winning data.
United consider the player worth £50 million, almost half of Brighton’s previous valuation of £100 million – although it remains unclear if the Seagulls’ stance has changed.
The 20-time Premier League champions are also reportedly monitoring Spurs centre-back Micky van de Ven as they search for a left-footed centre-back with Champions League experience to complement youngsters Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro, as well as Harry Maguire and Lisandro MartĂnez.
The Dutchman is contracted to Spurs until 2029, although, given his reputation, he would be unlikely to remain at the club if the side were relegated.
United may face competition from a number of European clubs, including Liverpool.
Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson tops United’s list of midfield targets, although Evangelos Marinakis believes the player is worth as much as £125 million, a price that may cause a snag in potential negotiations.
United’s rivals, Manchester City, are reportedly the player’s favoured destination at this time, with a move potentially hinging on whether Rodri joins Real Madrid this summer.
Los Blancos midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni is also being discussed among United’s hierarchy.
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is also highly thought of at Old Trafford, although concerns remain over his transfer fee.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes, and Wolves’ João Gomes have also been observed by United, while a deal for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali seems unlikely.
In total, United want to make four summer signings, including two midfielders, an experienced striker and a left-back, with Tyrell Malacia likely to depart, leaving a vacancy at left full-back, while the ageing Luke Shaw’s minutes will need managing moving forward.
The Athletic also claims that “Carrick’s future is still to be decided”.
A left winger is also being considered. United return to action at home against Brentford on April 27.
