Manchester United have identified their number one summer transfer target, although the player's wage demands could prove to be a hurdle.

It looks set to be a busy summer transfer window for United, with new minority owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INOS keen to revamp Erik ten Hag's squad.

An audit of the United squad is already underway, with central defence, full-back and striker identified as areas needing reinforcement.

Ten Hag hasn't been dealt much luck with injuries this season, particularly in the defensive department.

Injuries to the likes of Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw have left United's centre-back options threadbare this term.

With the futures of Maguire and Varane uncertain and doubts growing over Martinez' longevity - the 26-year-old has suffered foot and knee injuries this season - INEOS want to recruit a new central defender.

With financial regulations and the planned redevelopment of Old Trafford limiting Ratcliffe's spending power in the market, United are reportedly targeting Juventus defender Gleison Bremer as a budget-friendly option.

The Brazilian defender has impressed this season with the Serie A giants, having joined the club from Torino in 2022.

Bremer only signed a new contract with Juventus late last year, but according to the i, his deal includes a €50 million (around £43m) release clause.

While the fee might be reasonable, Bremer's wage demands might prove to be a hurdle, as will competition from other potential suitors.

Real Madrid are expected to battle United for the 26-year-old's signature, and the presence of several of his Brazil teammates could sway his decision towards the Bernabeu.

Chelsea and Tottenham are also interested in Bremer, although the latter are unlikely to be able to match United's and Real Madrid's wage offers.

Reports in Italy claim Juventus are already considering replacements for Bremer in the summer, with Bologna star Riccardo Calafiori a potential option.

United are also keen on Everton youngster Jarrad Branthwaite, although the Premier League side would reportedly demand £75m.
